One of the most common questions we get asked is whether a railing should be made in mild steel (often called “iron” in everyday conversation) or stainless steel. Both are good options — the right choice depends on location, budget, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.
Mild Steel
Mild steel is the more affordable option and can be shaped into almost any design, from simple bars to detailed scrollwork. It needs a proper coating — paint or powder coating — to resist rust, and that coating needs occasional touch-ups over time, especially in exposed outdoor locations.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel costs more, but it resists corrosion far better without needing a protective coating. For coastal properties, or railings that see constant moisture, it’s often the better long-term choice — the higher upfront cost can work out cheaper over the years if it means avoiding repeat repainting or rust repairs.
Our Recommendation
If your property is more than a few kilometres from the coast and the railing is under some form of cover, well-finished mild steel will usually serve you well for years. Right on the coast, or somewhere the railing gets constant rain and sun, stainless steel is worth the extra cost.
